WHAT DID YOU SAY?
TASK: You are going to briefly investigate the derivation and explain a common expression used in everyday English.

PRODUCT: You are going to explain this in an audio file (known as a podcast) that will be posted on the Internet for the world to hear.

STEPS:

1. Using these two websites, choose a saying for your project

2. After sharing your selected saying (only one per class!), you are to write a script for your podcast. Your script must contain the following parts:

• SAYING (what is the common expression you have chosen)
• MEANING (what does the it mean in everyday language)
• CONTEXTUAL USE (explaining that you understand the phrase)
• COUNTRY OF ORIGIN (you may need to do a quick Google Search)
• DERIVATION OF THE SAYING (must be told in first person to explain how the phrase came to be)
• START OF SCRIPT: “Have you ever heard someone say, “xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx”? OR “The other day, my __ said to me, “USE PHRASE HERE”. I wondered what THAT could mean.

3. Record your script using Audacity and save it as an mp3.

SAMPLE SCRIPT

{SAYING} The other day, my mom said to me, “I always seem to be in the limelight”. I wondered what THAT could mean.
{MEANING} She explained to me that being in the limelight is an expression that means that people are always paying particular attention to you.
{CONTEXT} People seem to watch and model what she does and they always ask her for advice, yet she doesn’t understand why people are looking toward her. This happens to her at her job, with her friends, and sometimes at places where she doesn’t even know people like the grocery store.
{COUNTRY OF ORIGIN}
This saying is from Edinburgh, Scotland.
{DERIVATION OF SAYING}
“I’m Thomas Drummond. In 1816, I figured out a way to make a spotlight for theatre productions. I took a canister of lime and heated it with incandescnse flame, put a lens over it and POW, the light that came out of it was very very bright. When the light was shone on the actor, he was more visible to the audience. Soon, every actor wanted to be in the “limelight.”
